Working in an industry that values creativity and artistry is a dream come true for China-born Vera Zheng. After studying jewellery design and gemmology, Zheng embarked on her dream profession in 2012 and established her brand, Lighthouse.
The designer, who also has a background in economics and management, knows the importance of making customers understand a jewellery piece's investment value.
“Each component and the stories behind it contribute to the true value of a jewellery piece,” Zheng remarked. “My training in gemmology and colourology helped me realise my dream of bringing together design inspirations, craftsmanship, artistry and the beauty of nature.”
She described jewellery as an impeccable medium to communicate love in the form of wearable art. “With Lighthouse, I hope to connect with the community by sharing with them my life stories and creations, and eventually letting more people from all over the world understand and appreciate oriental culture and art,” she added.
Zheng said she mainly draws inspiration from everyday life. One of her collections, “Piao,” which means flow with the wind, was influenced by pearls accidentally bouncing on a table while she was designing a piece for a client's 30th wedding anniversary.
Another remarkable design is a ring, which uses a special technique to demonstrate the delicate and intricate movements of a butterfly's wings.
Amid the internet era, Zheng said the younger generation of buyers has become a major force in the global consumer market and with this comes expected changes in the trade. Zheng however remains committed to originality and creating jewellery pieces that genuinely express her emotions and philosophy in life.
