Chinese tourists’ rising interest in classic and collectible jewellery pieces is driving retail sales in London’s vintage jewellery district, according to a retailer at Mayfair’s Burlington Arcade in London.
Michael Rose, founder and managing director of vintage jewellery retailer Michael Rose Jewels, cited a 30 percent increase in the number of high-spending Chinese customers who visit his jewellery shops beginning June last year.
Rose was quoted as saying in a South China Morning Post report that Chinese tourists don’t buy trendy jewellery for everyday use but are instead purchasing bespoke and vintage jewellery pieces to collect.
According to the jeweller, Chinese tourists have become more sophisticated and educated in their choice of jewellery to purchase, particularly when buying vintage jewellery. Rose’s most popular vintage items include jade, pearl and diamond jewellery pieces, the report said.
