Russian mining giant Alrosa is commencing diamond mining operations in Zimbabwe, the company disclosed recently.
Alrosa CEO Sergey Ivanov made the announcement during Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s visit to Moscow.
Ivanov said, “We are ready to develop new joint projects for diamond exploration and extraction. We also seek to support Zimbabwe in the development of its diamond-mining industry in line with industry best practices. We are happy to share with our partners a wealth of experience in the field of mineral exploration and diamond mining.”
The partnership is expected to result in in joint diamond and other ore-mining enterprises. Alrosa (Zimbabwe) Ltd was also subsequently established in December 2018 in Harare after negotiations were firmed up. Alrosa’s experts, including geologists and mining engineers, are also set to arrive in the country to kick start the operations.
