Rubies from Greenland. Sapphires and emeralds from Ethiopia. Rubies and emeralds from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

These localities might not historically be known as major sources of precious gemstones but they have recently emerged as promising and interesting sources of some of the world’s most prized treasures.

These new gemstone sources, alongside traditional mines, will be the focus of this webinar, which is sponsored by the Centre for Gemmological Research. The webinar will be conducted in Chinese and English.

  • Edward Boehm
    Geologist and world-renowned gemmologist, and founder of RareSource

    Edward Boehm began his gemmological training as a teenager under the tutelage of his grandfather, Edward J. Gubelin, while spending summers with his grandparents in Switzerland. It was then that he realised his calling and decide to pursue a degree in Geology at Chapel Hill, NC, graduating with a double major in Geology and German. He continued his studies at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), earning his Graduate Gemology diploma in 1988. Boehm then worked in the industry for a few years before furthering his gemmological skills at the Gübelin Gem Lab in Lucern, Switzerland. He also successfully completed the Advanced Gemmology programme offered by the Swiss Gemmological Institute for Gemstone Research (SSEF) in Basel, Switzerland

    Founder and president of the Centre for Gemmological Research (CGR)

    Dr. Miro Fei-Yeung Ng is a gemmologist with a chemistry background (PhD from the University of Hong Kong). With 13 years of frontline lab certification and teaching experience, Dr. Ng started CGR in 2019 with the focus on practical gemmology and tailored courses to private clients. He is also an active contributor and participant in various associations and conferences. At the same time, Dr. Ng is the only Chinese professor at L’ÉCOLE School of Jewelry Arts supported by Van Cleef & Arpels.
