DESIGN JNA | 34 | OCT 2018 An epitome of connection, the “Circle of Light” pendant represents one’s own shining light. Glittering diamonds allude to the inner light that liberates one from fear, while the gold chain embraces everyone in a world of beauty and simplicity. Porel welcomed the launch of DESIGN HUB as it connects designers around the world, allowing them to engage and exchange ideas with their peers. He said he was eager to participate in similar competitions by DESIGN HUB, which would bring new elements to the jewellery industry. DESIGN HUB CONNECTING THROUGH A s a prelude to its upcoming launch, DESIGN HUB organised a jewellery design contest that attracted more than 100 entries from designers and students from various countries and regions, including mainland China, the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Jordan, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Ten finalists, drawing design inspiration from the competition's theme, CONNECT, were shortlisted for the contest. Their entries were presented at the 2018 September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair. Visitors to the DESIGN HUB booths voted for their favourite entry under a one-man, one-vote scheme. The contest received more than 1,000 votes from September 12 to 15. Arindam Porel of the United Arab Emirates was declared the competition’s champion, followed by Meltem Sahan and Mohammed Khosht as the 1 st and 2 nd runners-up respectively. Since she intends to create her own jewellery brand in the future, she considers DESIGN HUB a useful platform that will enable her to easily reach her target audience. Khosht visualises an encounter between the Arabian horse and the dragon. His hometown is 6,181 kilometres from China – what connects them is more than what divides them. To him, the theme “Connect” symbolises unity. He said he hoped to gain recognition in design circles and connect with his peers on DESIGN HUB.
